Social Bookmarking: Who Needs It?

What is Social Bookmarking?

There are two root keywords in the term. Bookmark is, obviously, one and the other is social.

To avoid confusion, simply visualize a bookmark. What does it do?

If you’re reading your favorite book, let’s say its title is 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey – I’m sure you don’t like to mark the pages with a pen or fold a page into two to remember where you have stopped. Your book will be a mess if you’re doing this practice.

Taking care of your book means you need to insert a bookmark in between pages to remember the exact page you’ll be reading the next day.

After reading your book, you decided to recommend it to your friends, teachers and co-workers. What will you do?

Of course, you need to socialize. Send them a mail with a link to where they can buy the book; share them what you have learned while having lunch or write a review about it and post it in your blog.

Social bookmarking – in the world of Internet – is similar to reading a book and interacting with people. It allows you to organize, store and manage your list of websites (like a bookmark you insert in a book). It’s a term, originally coined by a bookmarking website Delicious in 2003, that allows other people to immediately search and find your webpage (creating web of interactions).

For example, if you are reading book reviews, you post its URL on the bookmarking site. If ten or twenty of your friends are members of the site, they can also view the URL you have posted.

Popular Social Bookmarking Sites

There are thousands of social bookmarking websites and the most popular is Twitter. Twitter can either be tagged as a bookmarking or networking site (there is a difference between these two). Once you’re a member of Twitter, you’re not only making friends with thousands of people with similar interest as you are; you’re also showing the public how an expert you can be in a specific niche.

By consistently posting tweets, uploading photos, replying and retweeting tweets – the people will start noticing your presence and your friend base will simply grow.

Other popular social bookmarking sites are Digg and StumbleUpon. Based on an update released by Alexa Global Traffic Rank, both sites receive an estimate of more than 25 million and 17 million unique visitors, respectively. Other popular websites are Reddit, Pinterest, BuzzFeed, Delicious, Fark, Shashdot, Friendfeed, Clipmarks, Newsvine and Diigo (ebizmba, April 2012).

Social Bookmarking in Online Business

Whether you’re a student, a regular internet-user or a businessman, social bookmarking sites can be a helpful tool. As a student, you can immediately share research with your classmates. If you’re a big tennis fan, you can follow your favorite players and bloggers on Twitter to stay track with the daily events.

If you’re a businessman, you create an online identity when using a social bookmarking site. With your busy schedule, there’s only a need for you to choose one popular bookmarking site. For example, if you join Twitter, make sure you update your profile by posting worth-reading websites, tweet your daily realizations and reply to your followers.
